Once upon a year In a Roumanian village square The sound of music was in the air Jews and gypsies playing without care Nobody watched television Let’s all go down there Let’s all go down there Dance to the music Swing to the sound Circle everybody round and round Tell all the people all through the town Just get down, just get down, just get down Dance with your brother Give him a push Go get your sister off her tush Rich man or peasant Village idiot or clown Just get down, just get down, just get down Let’s have a party Let’s have a feast Go get the rabbi and the priest Klezmers and gypsies don’t muck around Just get down, just get down, just get down Moon shining brightly It’s a natural high All of Transylvania’s dropping by Cossacks come riding, they jump to the ground They just get down, just get down, just get down Lots of celebrities All kinds of stars If you look real good you might just spot the Czar He’s dancing with the Kaiser Hanging on to their crowns Just get down just get down, just get down Werewolves start howling Ghosts sing harmonies Vampires vamp out from the cemetery Klezmers and gypsies don’t muck around Just get down, just get down (3x) Just get down

1. He was born in Radzivil in Poland where his father dealt in matches But Papa died in a train crash and so Tante Basya brought up klaine Mateus He could have gone to med school but his heart was set on something rather risky And he became apprenticed to he famous cantor Moishe Koussevitsky 2. In 1939 he fled from Warsaw to evade the Nazi order And with a group of refugees escaped on foot across the Russian border And in a little Russian town he fell in love with Channa and he married her And as the fighting threatened to engulf them they took refuge in Siberia Matus Radzivilover In his Polish pullover Matus Radzi-vilo-vilo-vilover Chazen Radzivilover Countless blessings to confer Matus Radzi-vilo-vilo-vilover! 3. And when the war had ended back to Poland with his wife and daughter came But his family home was ruined and not one of his own relatives remained They sailed to New York City and he found some work in shtiebelach on the Lower East Side And living ‘neath a synagogue once saved the torah from a raging fire 4. A second girl was born and he became the cantor of the famous Slonimer Schul And to the congregation there his singing was a bright and precious jewel He sang across America in synagogues from L.A to the Catskills In T’ronto, Buenos Aires, a long, long way from the Polish town of Radzivil 5. And if you went to Matus’ house he’d offer you plum brandy and blue vodka And after Channa’s tasty food a special treat, the fiery hot Persovka Then after dinner we’d all get to singing with on top his gorgeous tenor With Channa singing harmonies, it was a time I always will remember

Mordechai was a Benjamite born in old Jerusalem He fought against the Persians but the Persians were too strong They wasted the city and when the Persians captured him Mordechai was carted off to Babylon He had a niece she was an orphan So he raised her as his own He changed her name to Esther Because he had a dream One day she would share the thro-o-o-one Ch. Mordechai Mordechai what a guy! (4x) The mighty king of Persia was Ahashverus He’d divorced his wife and so he needed a new bride And so they organised a national beauty contest Girls turned up from far and wide When Mordechai heard about the contest He said “Esther, you must do this. Get an entry form But when you meet the king Never ever tell him that you’re Jew-ew-ew-ish” Now every contestant had one year’s beauty treatment And one by one they went to see the king When it was Esther’s turn the king was delighted She was the sweetest thing he’d ever seen He made Esther queen of Persia And Mordechai’s dream came true She always kept The promise to her uncle Nobody knew she was a Jew-ew-ew-ew

about

This CD includes the track "Tchavolo Swing" featured on Joseph Herscher's machine video, The Page Turner.
Except for the traditional Bulgar, played with typical Jews Brothers panache, and their version of Tchavolo Swing from the film Latcho Drom, here with fun French lyrics by Linn Lorkin, this is an album of original music in the spirit of klezmer. They range from poignant ballads like Hobos and Matus Radzivilover (about a Jewish cantor) to the mad inventiveness of Thredbo, Thredbo with many visits to the territory of swing - and that is swing in the old 30s New York klezmer style, as only The Jews Brothers can play it! Add to that Hershal's inimitable multiple vocal and instrumental arrangements and his and Linn's distinctive voices and styles, plus Nigel Gavin's wild guitar and mandolin solos and you have a unique CD that many a JBB fan has worn out !

about

The Jews Brothers Band Auckland, New Zealand

Twenty years ago, inspired by a klezmer tune playing on an Auckland café’s stereo, Hershal Herscher picked up his accordion and started playing the music his grandfather Harry had brought to New York from the Ukraine.

The rhythm he was pumping out acted like a magnet on three musician friends who were in the caf that day. From that nucleus The Jews Brothers Band was born.
